…I love the way new technologies improve our ability to communicate. I text and e-mail like everyone else. But sometimes listening to call-in radio shows makes me wish for the days of less noise when ridiculous half-baked opinions were kept for round the kitchen table or the garden shed rather than shared with the world.
…a confession: This morning I managed to stop myself from being a complete arse. I had to make a breakfast run to Tesco. I’m heading to the checkout with an armful of muesli and a litre of milk when a terrifically old man moving at the speed of a glacier arrives ahead of me at the only available check-out. I sighed inwardly and could feel myself starting to get a bit frustrated (that’s the arsey bit). Then I realised three things: (1) this man is really old and for that very fact deserves some level of respect, (2) despite the obvious challenge buying a newspaper and cat food created for him, he was incredibly pleasant to the girl on the check-out and (3) why was I in such a hurry in the first place? What did I need to do that was so very important? Oh yeah – eat breakfast! Confession over!
